Project Catnip will be available for all Windows Insider Program users. At first, it will be a Windows app, but Microsoft says it will also be available on Android and iOS. Microsoft’s continued use of PWA technology means porting across platforms is a simple effort for the company. While availability will be across platforms and for all Insiders, Catnip is starting as a preview. Currently the app is only available for select Windows Insiders but will be available more widely in the near future. “Project Catnip is our new PWA (Progressive Web App) of our Insider website that showcases the latest Windows Insider news and brings together key Insider information, including build releases, Insider stories, Flight Hub, and Insider cohorts you’re part of, all in one place. It also showcases your Insider profile and your Insider achievements. And because it’s a PWA, it works across platforms and has offline support. Our canary ring filled up quickly and is trying it out now, but we’ll let you know when it’s available for all our Windows Insiders.”
PWA Focus
Last year, Microsoft explained why it has continued its interest in PWAs despite the death of Windows Phone. If you have not seen the term, a PWA is a regular web page that can be used like a traditional or mobile application. They load like a regular page but can offer things like offline support, launching from the home screen, and push notifications.
